Why you must register your drone

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires all recreational drone pilots to register any unmanned aircraft weighing more than 0.55 lbs (250 grams) and up to 55 lbs before flying outdoors. Flying an unregistered drone can result in civil penalties of up to $27,500 and criminal penalties up to $250,000.

Required by U.S. federal law

Recreational drone pilots must register under 49 U.S.C. §44809 before flying outdoors.

Valid for 3 full years

Each FAA registration certificate is valid for 36 months from issue date.

One number, all your drones

Recreational pilots use one registration number for all drones they own.

Drone laws in all 50 states

Federal rules decide whether and where you can fly. States regulate privacy, trespass and critical infrastructure — and eleven states preempt local drone ordinances entirely.
